5S Wondering Questioning Learning

Work Hard and Never Give Up

PrimeSci Science Incursion

August1

IMG_0356

On Thursday the 17th of July a lady called Sally came in from PrimeSci to teach 5S and 5P more about science. My group was chemical and physical changes, we learnt how to tell the difference between physical changes and chemical changes.

The most interesting thing I learnt was how chemical changes are different to physical changes. A physical change is, for example, you have a 5cm Lego block but it can’t move by itself so you put more blocks onto it, so now it’s a 15cm block.

I was surprised to learn that when you add a liquid to a chemical it can turn into a gas which I thought was cool. Learning about gases, liquids and solids made me think about why we have these things because you use liquids for dishes and cleaning windows, solids are plates and cups, but I liked learning more about gases.
At the end of our session Sally did an explosion with a dishwasher tablet and some water and it made a big BOOM! I really enjoyed Sally coming in to talk to us, it was really fun.

St Peter’s Orientation Day

December1

On Friday Grade 5’s were invited to attend both St Peter’s Campus’. This was a great opportunity for us to see what it is like at secondary school and participate in some of the classes. Some of us will also attend these schools in 2015.

Firstly we went to St Peter’s East campus where we had a Science lesson. We watched an experiment make elephant toothpaste, made slime, used magnets and looked through telescopes.

The we went to St Peter’s West Campus. As we ate our lunch we watched a drama performance about Little Red Riding Hood. The we got to play outside where we meet and talked to our brother’s or sister’s and past St Agatha students. Next it was time for some classes. We had an IT lesson, Art lesson and Design & Technology lesson.

What we enjoyed

  • Drama Performance
  • Art
  • Science
  • Seeing old friends, buddies and St Agatha students
  • Making Christmas decorations
  • Playing outside

What we were challenged by

  • How big the school was
  • Thinking about going to secondary school in a few years time
  • That we seemed really small compared to the St Peter’s students
  • Feeling like being in Grade Prep again
  • Not knowing where everything was
We would like to give a big thank you to the teachers and students at St Peter’s for organising the day. We really enjoyed it.

Banksy – Graffiti Art

November20

For a couple of weeks 5S and 5P have been doing Banksy art work. Banksy is a man who lives in America and he goes around at night and does art graffiti. All his art that he does means something. We all made 1 or 2 of the art work. It’s fun and every ones art has a message. He does not want any one to know who he is so he wears black. Mrs Carey’s friend had a Banksy painted near her house in New York. There are ones about saving animals and there are ones about the environment.

Here are a few of our Banksy’s –

Term 4 Learning

October29

Stephanie

This term I learned how to make some really random art like a robot face and my face but in Japanese look it took me three lessons but it was fun. I learned how to make a swan or a bird out of origami I made a couple of mistakes but I got there and fixed it my favourite art piece was the mucked up robot face. My least favourite one was the origami because I never seem to get it right.

Fahtima

This term I learnt about the parliament and I learnt how the parliament works and what they do in the parliament. I also learnt about the 3 levels of government and they are federal government, state and territory government and local government and I also learnt what each one  takes care of. The federal government takes care of the country, state and territory government takes care of the state and the local government takes care of the suburbs and cities.

Keeley

This term I have learnt all about the parliament.I learnt there is the Speaker, Clerk and Fill in Clerk, Sergeant in arms, the whips, the minister and shadow minister. We learnt how a bill gets passed and where a bill gets passed on. We also made our own Parliament, which really helped to learn what happens.

Nathan C

I’ve learnt that in Government there are 4 main levels. The Government, Opposition, Minor party and Independents. They are all ways having a debate.I also learnt that In the chamber the government sit on the left and the opposition sit on the right and the minor party and independents sit together at the back.

Matt

I have learnt about the government and that there is 3 levels of government. The levels are Federal,State and Local. At first I didn’t know that there was 3 levels of government I just thought that there was parties. And I learnt that they do their debates in the room of “The Chamber”.I didn’t know that they had a speaker I thought that they just did debating. And that the Government and the Opposition have debates all the time and making new laws for Australia.

Nathan N

I have leant how to subtract and add fractions and how to put them on the number line and I have also leant a lot about the Parliament House  and how the bill comes in and also the sitting of the Parliament House and what they have to say and where the bill goes to.

Jess

MATHS
In maths I’ve learned how to do adding/subtracting fractions
Example:
Adding
2  6   8
– + – = –
3 3    3
So it was 2 over 3+ 6 over 3= 8 over 3

Subtracting
6    2      4
–  –    –  =   –
3        3       3
So it was 6 over 3- 2 over 3= 4 over 3

INQUIRY
In inquiry I’ve learned about the government .
In class we’ve got the class set up like the parliament.
One side is the government and the other is the opposition .
We have the speaker , Sargent of arms and the Prime Minister.

Nivya

Term 4, I learnt about the Government in Australia. The Parliament House is located in Canberra, the capital city of Australian Capital Territory. I learnt that there are 2 rooms where the debate goes to. They is the House of Representatives and the Senate. Before making a law the law is called a Bill.To make a law, they debate and it goes to the Senate and if it passes, the Governor General is forced to sign the Bill and make it a Law. To help us learn, Mrs.Summers made our class into a government. I also learnt that there are 3 levels of government. They are the Federal, State/Territory and the Local Government. The Federal Government is responsible over Australia. The State/Territory Government is in each state. The Local Government is all over Australia.

Lachlan P

This term I have learnt about Macquarie Island how they killed certain animals like the cats the dogs, we also learnt about the weather on Macquarie Island it is very cold there hot day is about 5 digress. We learnt how to use number lines to help us to solve fractions
[——————–] you can use number lines to help us to add fractions or subtract fraction. Percentages helps us calculate how many of what your talking about  in the room… Like there are 25% of the class in the class. How many people are still here if I had 28 people in my class there are 7 are here today how to figure this out 7 14 21 28
So 7 people is 25% of the class.

Tiana

This Term I have learnt how to get better at my division so now we do one hundred division sums every week in five minutes. I have learnt that division is linked up to multiplication so division can help people with multiplication as well. I have also learnt how division sums can help us with all the multiplication sums.

5 x 7 = ?   or    ? ➗ 5 = 7     The answer is of course 35.

Louie

This term I have learnt how to panadol, nurofen etc, can be counted as drugs and what the federal,state/territory and local do to support Australia.I also learnt that the stick that the Sargent in arms carrys is could a mace. And I learnt how to solve a fraction that has the nominator bigger than the denominator.

Science Fair

October5

On Friday 20th September we finally got to share our learning with other classes in our school. It was very exciting as we got to share our Hypothesis, Experiment and results from our Science Inquiry.

We displayed all of our work and answered lots of questions about what we had learned.

Our questions were –

How do flowers feed on water?
How do solids, liquids and gases form?
How much time does it take the planets to rotate the sun?
How do humans feel?
How do you get the perfect strike in soccer?
How do volcanoes erupt?
How do tornadoes form?
How does the heart work?
How do planets form?
How do volcanoes erupt?
How are colours formed?
How does food rot?
How does the brain get tricked?
How the brain works?
How do bubbles form?
How do we breath?

Scientist for a day

September21

On Thursday some Year 8 science students from Gleneagles secondary school came to our school to do some experiments with us. They were very well organised and we were split in to groups of 4 with 2 secondary students.

First we dissected a heart and then a brain. At first some of us thought that it would be disgusting but we all stayed and were very fascinated by what the students had to share with us.

Next we got to make tea bag rockets. This was so much fun. We emptied the tea out of the tea bag, then sat the open bag on top of the tea and lit the tea bag. It shot off like a rocket up to the roof.  We all got to have a turn each.

Next we made a lava lamp using water, oil, food dye and alkasaltza. This made a chemical reaction and the water rose to the top in bubbles and then sank again. Water is more dense than oil so the oil sat above the water as they don’t mix.

Then one student made ice cream with dry ice. The dry ice was Minus 78 degrees Celsius. The ice cream tasted like a lemonade spider.

It was a great way to conclude our Science Inquiry for the term. We would like to thank Mr Sharp for organising this with Mrs Scholyer and the Year 8 science students.

Lachie reporting on Danger Kids

September8
Hello my name is Lachie.
I’m coming to you from St Agatha’s hall. We are about to watch some DDDDDDDANNNNNNGEEEEEERRRR KIDS hosted by Miss Butera, Mr Mac and Mrs Hinds.
It is based on a guy by the name of Carlo San Francisco. He is trying to launch a missile that will make baddies always win but there is only 1 group of 4 kids that can save the world. They are the Danger Kids. So where in the world is Carlo San Francisco?
The class of 5S are playing Run Away Legionnaires and 5P are playing as the yodelers. The four danger kids are Gaucho, Butler, Cody and Gizmo.
I would highly recommend going to watch it.

From Lachie 🙂
